LGBTQ+ artists making waves in the Latin music industry

The Lo Nuestro Awards, presented by Univision, has announced its 2022 nomination lineup. With nearly 35 categories this year, the representation of LGBTQ+ and allied Latinx singers dominates some of the top categories, such as artist of the year and album of the year. Latinx musicians such as Ricky Martin, Joy Huerta, Mon Laferte, Christian Chávez with RBD and Jhonny Caz with Grupo Firme were amongst some of the nominees this year. Voting is open for the public until Monday, February 7, and the awards will stream live on February 24 at 4 PM PST.

Del Pueblo Católico y Gay podcast back for season 8

Del Pueblo Católico y Gay returns to streaming platforms on January 31. Host Eder Díaz Santillan, who grew up as a gay man in an often homophobic Catholic parish, returns to another season for his podcast. Santillan openly discusses his challenges growing up in this environment, sparking a more comprehensive conversation between faith, tradition, gender, and sexual identity.

New shows: Rebelde reboot and Señorita 89 

The nostalgia of Rebelde – a Mexican telenovela is back with a modern twist. The reboot of this beloved series premiered this month on Netflix, and on Pantaya, the new series Señorita 89 recently became available. Both shows have LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Using art to shine a light on champions of the queer community 

Ruby Marquez, better known as Broobs, is a collage artist and photographer, “bringing visibility to queer artists and queer activists and uses his following to educate and illuminate champions of the queer community.” Inspired by botanical elements and classic color palettes, Broobs draws from the shared stories of queer icons, victims of hate crimes, and his Latinx background to bring his work to life.

D.C.’s annual LGBTQ+ literary festival

OutWrite, an LGBTQ+ literature festival in the Washington, D.C. area, will be held August 5 – 7, 2022. Last year’s event included nearly 80 LGBTQ+ authors, some of whom have had a significant impact in the LatinX community. Authors included Richard Blanco, whom President Obama selected as the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history, Celeste Castro, American Mexican author of Own Voices, and Michael Nava, managing editor of Amble Press. OutWrite is currently “seeking reading, panel, and workshop submissions for our 2022 festival.” The deadline to submit is March 15, 2022.
